This course presents an introduction to the properties of concrete as needed in concrete construction, including strength and durability. Students receive a copy of Design and Control of Concrete Mixtures (9th edition), relevant industry handouts, as well as copies of each presentation.
Topics Covered include an introductory review of:

Materials for concrete, such as Portland and blended cements, supplementary cementing materials, aggregates and admixtures

Concrete durability

Procedures for concrete mix proportioning

Batching, mixing, transporting, handling, placing, consolidating, finishing and curing concrete

Hot and cold-weather concreting
-
Cause and methods of controlling volume changes

Control tests for quality concrete

Special types of concrete, such as high-performance, lightweight, and self-consolidating concrete

Standards from both Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) are referred to extensively

There is an open-book exam at the end of the course
